the preparation of instructional notes and dossiers. Five other civilians are also attached to the School, four as English teachers and one as a Civics teacher.

TRAINING

72. Upon enlistment in the Force all ranks are given a twenty-six week course of initial training known as the 'A' Course. The curriculum includes lectures on public relations, civics, the principles of law and legal procedures, court procedure, Police and Government Regulations, drill, musketry, physical training, self-defence, riot drill, life-saving and first aid. The course is designed not only to train the men in Police duties but also to broaden their general outlook and fit them for responsibility.

In-Service Training

73. Probationary Inspectors undergo phased continuation training at the Police Training School, and Inspectors in their sixth year attend a three-week course geared to junior staff level and designed to prepare them for a sub-divisional command.

74. All Constables attend a series of annual fortnightly courses up to the four years' service stage. To keep pace with recent expansion, it was necessary to run a number of these courses concurrently throughout the year. Traffic, C.I.D. and N.C.O. courses were also held as required, and in addition a refresher course was held for Constables in the six to ten year service group.

Special Courses

75. The Seventh Police Staff Course was held in January and February 1967 associated with the first of a series of Administrative Staff Courses arranged by the Government Training Unit. The two courses were com- bined so that the Police Course was held during afternoons and the Administrative Course during mornings, the whole occupying a period of two weeks.

76. In March, 1967, the Ninth Annual Course on Social and Psycho- logical Aspects of Crime was held at the Hong Kong University. It was attended by 21 senior Police officers, as well as army and prison officers and social welfare workers. The seminar theme this year was 'Society and the Criminal Treatment or Punishment?"
