several new sub-committees of the Transport Advisory Committee. The Hon. Y. K. KAN, O.B.E., Chairman of the old Advisory Committee, was appointed Chairman of the new Committee and the Commissioner of Police continued to serve as an ex-officio member. The terms of reference of the Transport Advisory Committee now embrace all aspects of land and sea transport.

164. From its inception, the Police Traffic Branch established close liaison with the Committee in the planning and implementation of im- provements to the public transport service and facilities.

ROAD SAFETY MEASURES

165. Officers of the Road Safety Section of the Traffic Branch con- tinued to visit schools, giving talks and demonstrations to pupils, instruc- tion concerning the operation of School Crossing Patrols, and advice on road safety displays on the occasion of schools' open day.

166. Training of School Safety Patrols continued, and by the end of the year more than 1,500 patrol members from 24 schools were in operation.

167. Dominating activities throughout the year were a 'Road Safety Fortnight', Road Safety Campaigns in various districts, a Traffic Safety Painting Contest, a Road Safety Picture Colouring Competition, a Travel Courtesy Campaign, Bicycle Proficiency Contests, and Bus and Tram Drivers' Safety Awards sponsored by civic-minded local organizations in conjunction with the Road Safety Section of the Traffic Branch and the Road Safety Association of Hong Kong. The aim of these projects was to foster road safety consciousness amongst the public and to serve as a reminder of the importance of Road Safety, and the need for good road behaviour by all road-users. All events were well patronized and encouraging progress was made in this field.

MARINE DISTRICT

168. During the period under review the Anti-Illegal Immigration Branch and Marine Division were combined into the Marine Police Dis- trict. The District is commanded by an Assistant Commissioner of Police
