prosecuted compared with 18.6% in the previous year. There were de- creases in the following offences, Serious Assaults (-30 or 31%) other robberies (-23 or 20%) pickpocketing (--41 or 45%). There was however, an increase in the number of juveniles prosecuted for larceny of bicycle (+58 or 55%).

96. Young persons (i.e. those between 16-20 years) prosecuted for Serious Crime numbered 1,533 compared with 1,399 in the previous year, representing 15.9% of all prosecutions compared with 16.1% last year. Arrests among these youthful offenders showed increases for per- jury (+26 or 137%), snatching (+23 or 77%), larceny of bicycle (+23 or 50%), and loitering and trespass (+23 or 26%).

97. Young offenders dealt with by the Juvenile Liaison Sections in the Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and New Territories police districts during the year numbered 613 compared with 353 last year, of whom 2% came to the notice of Police for the commission of further offences.

CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION DEPARTMENT

98. The C.I.D. is under the direction of a Senior Assistant Com- missioner of Police. His Deputy in Headquarters is a Senior Super- intendent. A Chief Superintendent and a Senior Superintendent are in charge of the Anti-Corruption Branch and the Narcotics Bureau respectively. The establishment of Superintendents/Assistant Superin- tendents is fourteen. Five are in charge of sections of C.I.D. Head- quarters, three in charge of sections of the Anti-Corruption Branch, one is in the Narcotics Bureau and four are attached to Districts.

99. The Department consists of seven main groups: The Anti- Corruption Branch, the Narcotics Bureau, the Commercial Crime Office, The Triad Society Bureau, the General Investigation Office, the Prevention of Crime Office, and Aids to Investigation Section, which are described below.

ANTI-CORRUPTION BRANCH

100. During the year one Superintendent/Assistant Superintendent post was created, offset by the abolition of a Chief Inspector post. A third section was formed, headed by the new Superintendent/Assistant Superintendent, so that there are now three operational sections, each with its own officers and rank and file, as well as its own clearly defined area of responsibility.
