104. Of the 17,076 cases of Serious Crime investigated 11,900 were cleared up, giving an overall detection rate of 69.7% compared with 70.8% in the previous year.
JUVENILE CRIME
105. A total of 1,612 juveniles (i.e. those under 16 years of age) were arrested and prosecuted for serious crime compared with 979 in the previous year, representing 18.6% of the total number of persons prosecuted compared with 14% in the previous year. Of these 720 were for simple larceny, 113 for robberies, 106 for larceny of bicycle, 97 for wounding, 91 for pickpccket and 72 for larceny in dwelling.
106. Young persons (i.e. those between 16 and 20 years) prosecuted for Serious Crime numbered 1,399 compared with 971 in the previous year, representing 16.1% of all prosecutions, compared with 14% last year. Arrests among these youthful offenders showed substantial increases for affrays (+52 or 520%), woundings (+71 or 83%), robberies (+63 or 68%), pickpockets (+13 or 68%), larceny of bicycle (+16 or 53%), simple larceny (+61 or 23%) and larceny in dwelling (+15 or 28%).
107. Young offenders dealt with by the Juvenile Liaison Sections in Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories police districts during the year numbered 353 compared with 224 last year, of whom 3% came to the notice of police for the commission of further offences.

CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION DEPARTMENT
108. During the year the post of Director of Criminal Investigation was upgraded to the new rank of Senior Assistant Commissioner and the post of the officer in charge of the Anti-Corruption Branch was upgraded to the new rank of Chief Superintendent. The Deputy Director and the officer in charge of the Narcotics Bureau are Senior Superintendents and there is an establish- ment of ten Superintendents/Assistant Superintendents. Four are in charge of sections of C.I.D. Headquarters, two of sections of the Anti-Corruption Branch, one in the Narcotics Bureau and three are attached to districts.
109. The Department consists of six main groups: The Anti-Corruption Branch, the Narcotics Bureau, the Commercial Crime Office, the Triad Society Bureau, the General Investigation Section and Aids to Investigation Section, which are described below.
