TRAINING IN POLICE DUTIES
73. Upon enlistment in the Force all ranks are given a twenty-six week course of initial training known as the 'A' Course. The curriculum includes lectures on public relations, civics, the principles of law and legal procedures, court procedure, Police and Government Regulations, drill, musketry, physical training, self-defence, riot drill, life-saving and first aid. The course is designed not only to train the men in Police duties but also to broaden their general outlook and fit them for responsibility.
In Service Training
74. Probationary Inspectors return to the Police Training School for 2 weeks training courses during their second and third years of service. Inspectors also attend a 3 weeks advanced training course during their sixth year of service.
75. Rank and File training underwent a radical change during the year. In October 1964 training was centralized at the Police Training School and all Constables now attend annually a fortnight's full-time course at the School until they complete four years service.
76. Other courses held at the Police Training School are Traffic Courses for Traffic personnel and personnel who are likely to transfer to Traffic Branch; C.I.D. Courses for Rank and File detectives and personnel who are considered to be C.I.D. material, N.C.Os. Training Courses for newly promot- ed N.C.Os.; Instructors Courses to replace staff at the Police Training School; Marine Police Conversion Courses for civilian staff of the Marine Police who are transferring to the disciplined staff and special selection courses for promotion from the Rank and File to Inspector.
Special Courses
77. In November 1964 and in March 1965, Police Staff Course Nos. 4 and 5 respectively, were held. Each was of a fortnight's duration and was attended by about 25 police and other Government officers. The objects of these courses were to give a grounding in staff work, a knowledge of current policies and an insight into the work of Government at administrative level. Both were deemed successful.
78. In December 1964 the seventh annual course on Social and Psycho- logical Aspects of Crime was held at the Hong Kong University. It was attended by 24 senior police officers, 2 Army officers, 5 Prison officers, 5 Social Welfare officers and 1 Revenue Inspector. The theme of the Course was 'Narcotics & Crime'.
