55. The conversion of the police launch engineroom staff from civilian to disciplined status referred to in last year's report was completed and took effect from 1st April, 1964. The new uniformity of rank and status has assisted with problems of morale, pay differences and discipline. It is hoped that launch cooks will also be found from among uniformed staff during the coming months, this conversion was under consideration at the end of the year.

FINANCE

56. The authorized annual estimate was $85,743,800 and actual expendi- ture was $90,539,840. The excess of expenditure over the estimate was mainly due to the introduction of an Interim Pay Award and Children's Allowances which were back-dated to July, 1963. A breakdown of actual expenditure for the last three years is shown at Appendix 10. Revenue collected under subheads controlled by the Police amounted to $55,424,305 as against the estimated $33,491,000 but the former figure included over $15 million in respect of a new item introduced during the

year.

57. In addition, revenue of $2,621,042 was collected by the Police in co-operation with other Government departments.

POLICE SAVINGS SCHEME

58. The fourth year of the Police Savings Scheme ended on 31st December, 1964 when 1,846 other ranks were participating. Total deposits since the beginning of the scheme amounting to $803,100 and a sum of $56,684-85 has been credited as interest to depositors' accounts during that period.
