223. Auxiliary personnel are civilian volunteers. When mobilized they are completely integrated with the regular Force. Each of the eight Auxiliary territorial divisions works with its regular counterpart. Auxiliary Emergency Units operate in Hong Kong Island and Kowloon Districts in support of their regular colleagues and the Marine Contin- gent relieves regular crews on police launches. On mobilization the Auxiliaries, also supply staff officers and communications personnel for Colony, District and Divisional headquarters.

224. The establishment of the Auxiliaries rose from 1,976 all ranks to 2,277. The distribution is:

225. After the suspension of compulsory service in June, 1961 the strength declined to a lowest point of 1,300 but has since gradually risen. At the end of the year it was 1,508.

226. The new rank of Senior Inspector (Aux.) was introduced into the establishment on 15th January, 1963 when 15 posts were created. 227. The Marine Contingent was more active than usual during the year since it provided welcome assistance and relief to the regular Marine Division engaged on anti-illegal immigration operations. Apart from a number of week-end patrols, Auxiliary Marine personnel spent their annual camp period manning craft on these operations.

228. Instruction in seamanship, wireless-telegraphy, navigation and diesel engines was provided for Marine Auxiliary personnel.

229. The Marine Contingent also includes

Contingent also includes an Air Observer Squadron, personnel of which are trained to observe and report by radio from the air. The training is carried out with the co-operation of the Hong Kong Auxiliary Air Force using helicopters and Austers.

230. From June to September, 1962 the majority of personnel in territorial divisions attended Annual Camp at the Police Training School. The two Emergency Units underwent a week's training in anti- riot tactics at the Police Training Contingent, Fanling. This week was followed up by a number of week-end training periods.

231. Apart from the four awards to Auxiliary Officers of the Colonial Police Medal for Meritorious Service recorded in Part I, paragraph 17 of this Report, 29 members of the Auxiliaries were awarded the Colonial Special Constabulary Medal.
