1,706 exhibits of various kinds were studied. 2,724 blood groupings were established. Lectures for Hong Kong University medical students and police officers on the medical aspects of police work were given throughout the year.

Ballistics Office

159. This office examines fire-arms and explosives used in criminal cases and removes all arms, ammunition and explosives found by or reported to the Police. The office has extended its activities by under- taking comparisons of tool marks in burglary and breakings cases.

160. Investigations were conducted in 16 shooting cases and 40 accidents involving explosives. 33 fire-arms and 3,136 rounds of am- munition were seized and 16 fire-arms and 826 rounds of ammunition were found. Expert evidence was given in 20 cases. 17 fire-arms were added to the Force collection which now totals 93.

VEHICLES REGISTERED

161. During the year 8,316 vehicles were registered, raising the total number of registered vehicles at the end of the year to 65,572. Figures for the past five years are shown at Appendix 26.

DRIVING LICENCES AND DRIVING TESTS

162. There are two parts to the Hong Kong driving test. The first, a written paper, tests the candidate's knowledge of the Highway Code and other rules. The second is a practical driving test. 56,007 test forms were issued and 26,652 written tests conducted: 18,295 candidates passed, 8,357 failed. 42,443 driving tests were conducted: 10,553 passed and 31,890 failed.

163. The number of licensed drivers is now 133,051. Figures since 1958-59 are shown at Appendix 27.

INSPECTION OF VEHICLES

164. 35,375 motorized and 955 non-motorized vehicles were in- spected. These inspections are carried out by a section of the Traffic Office in three ways: all public vehicles are regularly inspected, vehicles
