147. 48,000 record checks were made, the majority of which were for vetting of prospective government employees and of applicants for naturalization.

148. In addition the Modus Operandi Index produced 73 positive results compared with 106 in the previous year.

149. 385 photograph identification parades were conducted resulting in 129 identifications.

150. Punch Card verifying and sorting equipment was installed in this office in November 1962 and a start has been made in converting all the information contained in the records, referred to in paragraph 146 to this punch card system. Complete conversion is likely to take a number of years since before information is transferred to cards it is being carefully checked.

Prevention of Crime Office

151. This office consists of the Deportation, Police Supervision and Vetting Sections and the Interpol Sub-bureau.

152. Since the enactment of the Emergency (Deportation and Detention) Regulations 1962, the special tribunal has heard 16 cases involving 38 detainees (see also sub-para. 32(a)).

153. 98 persons, including 2 British subjects, were deported.

154. Since the Police Supervision Ordinance came into force in 1956, 9,563 supervision orders have been made. Of these 1,363 are still in force, including 443 new orders issued during the year.

155. The Force continued to co-operate with the Hong Kong Dis- charged Prisoners' Aid Society and other voluntary organizations in their efforts to rehabilitate supervisees after their discharge from prison. At the end of the year there were 48 supervisees under the care of voluntary organizations.

156. 1,438 investigations were made of applicants for the Police Force.

157. The Interpol Sub-bureau participated in 67 investigations of an international nature.

Forensic Laboratory

158. Three forensic pathologists are attached from the Medical and Health Department to this Laboratory. They visited 94 scenes of crime and gave expert evidence on 122 occasions. 2,194 post-mortems were performed. In the Laboratory 506 victims and suspects were examined.
