junior officers, 116 N.C.Os. and 492 P.Cs. These police officers were supported by 174 civilian launch engineers of various grades, 18 clerical and 37 unskilled staff. These personnel manned Marine Police Head- quarters, 8 police stations and posts, 3 deep sea cruising launches, 10 cruising launches, 5 motor launches, 10 harbour patrol launches and 3 jet boats.

59. Recruits in this Division undergo the same initial six months' training course as their land counterparts. They undergo an additional one month's marine training after joining the Division. In the course of their service personnel are given the opportunity of attending courses to obtain the coxswains' certificate, a more advanced watch-keeping certificate and W./T. qualifications. Inspectors are encouraged to obtain a Navigation and Radar Observer's Certificate. Allowances are payable to all officers who hold these qualifications and use them at sea. 60. The changes to the strength and deployment of the Marine Division brought about by its transfer to the Anti-Illegal Immigration Branch are described at paragraph 188.

ESTABLISHMENT AND STRENGTH

61. The Force establishment for the financial year 1962-63 was 8,597 as against 8,352 for the previous year. The strength on 31st March, 1963 was 7,900; a deficiency of 697. This deficiency consisted of 1 senior officer, 28 junior officers and 668 other ranks.
