attendance at scenes of crime, post-mortem examinations, assistance on raids in some cases, and Court attendance. Lectures are also given on the various medical aspects of crime work, on the handling of exhibits, and on narcotics. The Senior Pathologist also lectures 5th year medical students at the University of Hong Kong. Many prominent local personalities visited the laboratory during the year, as well as senior police officers from other countries. The Police Chemist lectured police units and adult evening classes in narcotics.

137. During the year, new analytical methods of forensic work were experimented with and selected for application in the forensic field, e.g. the examination of plankton to ascertain drowning, and the detection of fingerprints on paper.

The Ballistics Office

138. The Ballistics Officer is primarily concerned with the examina- tion and disposal of all arms and explosives coming into the possession of the police, and inspects and advises on the storage and use of dangerous goods, generally explosives. Expert evidence relating to arms and explosives was given in Court on fifteen occasions during the year.

Prevention of Crime Office

139. Some reorganization of C.I.D. Headquarters was made during the year, and the Prevention of Crime Office now consists of three sections under the supervision of a Chief Detective Inspector.

140. The Police Supervisee section now deals with the screening and documentation of all persons placed under police supervision. This section also keeps in touch with the Discharged Prisoners' Aid Society and offers help to all supervisees who wish to lead an honest life.

141. The Deportation section is responsible for strict compliance with the legal procedures to be followed in all deportation cases and for the physical execution of orders made by the Governor in Council. It is also responsible for all procedures required for the detention of persons under the Emergency (Detention Orders) Regulations.

142. A third section is engaged in the vetting of applicants who wish to enlist in the Police Force and for making all necessary security checks and inquiries.

Identification Bureau

143. The Identification Bureau consists of the main fingerprint section, the scene of crime section, a photographic section, and the handwriting section.
