THE POLICE TRAINING SCHOOL

60. The School is situated at Aberdeen, 9 miles from the centre of the City of Victoria. The site is large and offers possibilities of development. Despite the fact that the existing buildings both for working and living purposes are somewhat austere, a high standard of training has been reached and is being maintained.

THE POLICE TRAINING CONTINGENT

61. This unit occupies a former army camp at Volunteer Slopes, Fan Ling. It was formed during 1957 and its establishment is two companies though it has only proved possible as yet to form one com- pany. Personnel from Districts and Branches are posted in rotation to the Contingent for six months' training in internal security duties and also to provide a reserve force available at short notice. All members of the Force will eventually go through a period of training at the Police Training Contingent.

STANDARDS FOR ENLISTMENT

62. All persons joining the Force are required to be of sound physique and with normal eyesight without glasses.

63. Overseas probationary Sub-Inspectors, who are recruited in the United Kingdom by the Crown Agents, are required to be single, be- tween the ages of twenty and twenty seven years, not less than five feet eight inches in height and of good general education.

64. Local probationary Sub-Inspectors are recruited locally on selection by a Board consisting of the Deputy Commissioner and the Commandant, Police Training School. They are required to be between the ages of twenty and twenty five years, not less than five feet six inches in height and in possession of a Hong Kong School Certificate. 65. Recruit Constables are selected by the Commandant, Police Training School from applicants between eighteen and twenty five years of age. They are required to be not less than five feet five inches in height and able to read and write Chinese fluently.

RECRUITMENT

66. During the year eight members of the inspectorate were pro- moted to the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police and at the end of the year eight others were acting as Assistant Superintendents of Police.
