year the number of registered aliens in the Colony rose from 6,854 to 8,896. For the purpose of registration persons of Chinese race are not treated as aliens unless they are natives of another country.
193. A total of 2,796 alien refugees arrived from China under the care of the United Nations Refugee Organization and 2,494 left the Colony. At the end of the year there were, however, still 953 such refugees awaiting resettlement.
194. This section also issued 4,730 visas and 8,543 extensions of stay as compared with 4,310 visas and 9,169 extensions in 1956/57.

The Certificate of Identity which was introduced to replace the old form of affidavit has proved very popular as can be seen from the issue figures.
REGISTRY
196. A total of 24,247 inward letters and 7,076 inward telegrams were received and dealt with at the Immigration Office. Outward correspondence included 51,872 letters and 6,441 telegrams. During the year it was necessary to open 583 additional personal files, 194 general files and 3,994 loose minute files.
IMMIGRATION BONDS
197. During the year sponsors of immigrants put up 3,236 cash bonds of which 2,770 were returned when conditions had been satis- factorily fulfilled. 142 were cancelled leaving 324 still in operation.
REVENUE
198. Revenue collected at the Immigration Branch was HK$1,639,- 083,95 as compared with HK$1,643,461.91 for the previous year.
