162. The standard of driving continued to improve. For the year the figure was 19,834 miles per accident, the best figure yet recorded. The total number of miles run on duty by police transport was 3,272,631.

164. During the year the police communications system was review- ed by a technical expert and proposals were submitted to Government. 165. The Force is equipped with 112 fixed, 114 mobile and forty portable radio stations. The operation and maintenance of radio installa- tions and equipment in the Police Force is the responsibility of police staff and during the year a high degree of efficiency was sustained.
Miscellaneous Aids
166. Two private automatic exchanges, one at the Colony Head- quarters and the other in Police Headquarters, Kowloon, are used in the operation of the Force telephone system. There are 200 lines in the Colony Headquarters exchange and 110 in the Kowloon exchange, both exchanges being interconnected.
167. Eight launches are radar equipped and in consequence are able to remain effective in weather which would otherwise immobilize them. Radar has also proved most useful on launches engaged in the detection and interception of vessels used for criminal activities.
168. A teleprinter system is in operation throughout the Force for the dissemination of information to police stations and branches. There are thirteen teleprinter receivers on Hong Kong Island, seven in
