TRAFFIC BRANCH ORGANIZATION

154. The Traffic Branch is the central organization for the control of road traffic in the Colony, including the registration and licensing of vehicles and drivers.

155. The Branch is commanded by a Gazetted Officer who is responsible for its administration and supervision. He is assisted by an Assistant Superintendent in Kowloon and a Chief Inspector in Hong Kong. Its strength at the end of the year was thirty Inspectors and 263 Rank and File.

156. The Branch contains sections, both on Hong Kong Island and the Mainland, for administration, accident investigation, statistics, the prosecution of traffic offences, motor vehicle examinations and driving test examinations. In its central office at the Central Police Station there are also sections for registration, licensing and traffic records.

157. The Branch has an allocation of four general purpose vans, four radio cars, forty seven solo motorcycles and seven motorcycle combinations.

Books and printed matter

158. A new Emergency Manual, for internal security training, and a new C.I.D. Manual were published during the year.

Clothing

159. A satisfactory standard of tailoring was maintained. No new items were introduced.

Accoutrements

160. The Force under normal circumstances is armed with batons and 0.38 calibre revolvers. Other weapons, which include rifles, Greener guns, Sterling guns, Bren guns and gas guns are held in reserve at Police Stations.

COMMUNICATIONS AND TRANSPORT

161. This Branch is commanded by the Staff Officer, Communica- tions and Transport. It is responsible for the operation of all police vehicular transport, communications and miscellaneous aids.
