KILOMETRES AND PASSENGERS

In 1990, a daily average of 2.65 million

passengers rode on the Company's buses (1989: 2.67 million), giving a total of 966

million passengers for the year (1989:974 million) and representing a decrease of 0.8% over the previous year. On the other hand, the actual distance travelled by the Company's buses went up by 4.3%, to a total of 196 million kilometres. This was mainly due to an increase in the number of buses on the road from 2,372 at the end of 1989 to 2,481 at the end of 1990, thanks to the improving bus captain situation and the introduction of more air-conditioned buses.

NEW ROUTES AND NEW BUSES

Last year, KMB continued to expand its bus network to meet the demand from the new developments throughout the Territory. The

major areas of growth are Tseung Kwan O, Ma On Shan, Tsing Yi, Tuen Mun, Tsuen

Wan and Sha Tin. A total of twenty-four

new routes were introduced in 1990. In

particular, six of them served the residents at the new developments while one was an additional cross-harbour route operating via the Eastern Harbour Crossing. Also, since the opening of the Shing Mun Tunnels in

April, 1990, six bus routes have been

introduced to provide direct, speedy bus

services between Sha Tin/Ma On Shan

and Tsuen Wan/Kwai Chung/Tsing Yi. In

addition, two all-night bus services were

introduced catering for the demand now arising at Tsing Yi and Tsim Sha Tsui.
