CHAIRMAN'S STATEMENT

Despite the Company's objections, the Government announced in February, 1988 that it had granted permission to the public light bus operators to increase the seating capacity in each public light bus from 14 to 16 seats. As franchised buses and public light buses are operating in competition in most areas, the latter's increase in seating capacity will, no doubt, have some adverse effects on KMB's operation.

Notwithstanding these negative

factors, new bus services are required to serve the new towns and housing estates which are being developed or scheduled to be developed in the

future. The Government's programme

to provide more and better housing for

the population, and to shift some of that population from the high density urban areas to the New Territories,

will continue to provide potential for further expansion of KMB's services in the coming years.

Under the Public Bus Services Ordinance, the Governor has appointed the persons holding the position of Commissioner for Transport and Deputy Secretary for

Mr James So Yiu Cho, JP, Commissioner for Transport, was appointed on 18th May, 1987, to replace Mr Peter Frederick Leeds, iso, JP, and Mrs Alice Lai Siu Po Chun, Deputy Secretary for Transport (Transport Services) was appointed on 8th June, 1987 to replace Mr David Lan Hong-tsung, JP. The valuable services rendered by Mr Peter Frederick Leeds and Mr David Lan Hong-tsung during their terms of directorship are greatly
