-92. During the period under review, progress on the various schemes in hand has been as follows:

Overall Progress

93. The number of flats completed during the period under review was 1,054. Work on the final section comprising 1,638 flats was well advanced.

94. Block F (Lilac House) and Block 1 (Cherry House) were delayed as a result of a geological fault which had to be overcome by soil stabilization using chemical grouting under pressure. These two blocks were completed and handed over in July, 1961. Block R (Lotus House) was delayed by the re-driving of piles sheared by earth tremors and was completed in May, 1961.

Block M

95. The general contract was completed by Messrs. On Lee & Co. and the block, now known as Gladiolus House, was handed over in March, 1962. With the growing demand of premises for kindergartens within the estate, the Authority decided to convert space in the sub- basement for this purpose with the yard as an open play area.

Blocks A, B, C & D

96. The presence of large boulders made piling extremely difficult, and operations had to be abandoned before completion of the entire area. The foundations of some sections were re-designed using spread footings where piles could not be driven. In addition the geological formation under part of Block A was found to have a fault similar to that encountered earlier under Blocks F & I, and soil stabilization by means of chemical pressure grouting had to be applied.

97. The main building contract in the sum of $10,222,192.08 was awarded to Messrs. Wan Hin & Co., Ltd. and concreting has reached the 8th floor of the 16-storey blocks.

Lift Alarm Systems

98. The installation of a lift alarm system for the whole estate was completed by Messrs. China Engineers Ltd. An alarm board was in- stalled at the Estate Office, where the failure of any lift in the estate is signalled by an alarm bell and indicating light.
