above Block E, which caused damage to the surface water drainage system. Fortunately, no structural damage of any consequence occurred, but the hill-face required extensive repairs, and some new retaining walls had to be built. The cost of repairs came to over $35,000.

78. The godown accommodation in Block E was rented to the Urban Services Department in November 1959, for $2,000 per month, on a 3-year lease. Certain structural alterations costing $20,000, were carried out, including the provision of steel roller shutter doors.

79. A lift alarm system, similar to that in operation on the North Point Estate, has been installed at a cost of $8,700. An indicator board is placed outside the caretaker's flat.

80. In August 1959, the Commissioner for Housing opened a children's library and club in the Welfare Centre, to be operated by the Boys' & Girls' Clubs Association. The afternoon and evening clubs are for tenants' children, in the age groups 12-15 and 15-18 years respectively, and are of great benefit. The popularity of the library can be gauged from the fact that during its first week of operation, about 400 children visited it daily. (see Fig. 1).

81. By converting odd spaces hitherto unused, two additional flats were provided in Blocks A and C, making the total number on the estate 638, all of which are occupied, with an annual rental income of over $850,000.

82. A count of the population on 30th June, 1959, when the estate was fully occupied, showed a population of 4,122, made up as follows:
