Parcels addressed to needy persons are admitted free of customs duty providing they contain only items of necessity (including up to 1 lb. coffee and 34 oz. tea) and do not exceed 200 DM in value. Customs duty is levied on tobacco products, cigarette papers, wines and spirits.
Seasonal (Christmas, birthday, and so on) gift parcels addressed to close relatives of the sender which contain reasonable quantities of items customary at family parties, for example, one bottle of spirits, 50 cigars or 100 cigarettes, are admitted customs free providing they do not exceed 200 DM in value.
Parcels and customs declarations should be clearly marked GESCHENKSENDUNG (Gift Parcel), and the declarations should indicate all the items contained and their value.
Packing: All parcels must be strongly packed.
Address: The relative Postal District (postleitgebiet) number, if known, should appear in the address of all parcels (and of other postal packets of any kind), preferably within a circle at the left-hand side of the name of the place of
destination, for example, [ 24a
is liable to lead to delay.

Parcels and so on, for Berlin should include in the address an indication of the Sector of the city, for example, British Sector.

Gifts may be sent in Small Packets but not in letter packets. They are subject to the same conditions as those by parcel post (see below).
