110. The 1973-74 outward international telephone traffic rose by 28.87 per cent to 9,389,311 minutes and inward traffic increased by 28.63 per cent over that of 1972-73 to 10,797,707 minutes.

111. Outward public telegraph traffic dropped in 1973-74 to 1,361,603 messages which is a 6.41 per cent decrease compared with the 1972-73 figure. Inward traffic remained at the same level, totalling 1,764,450 messages. The number of inland telegrams dropped by 7.20 per cent to 6,513, whilst transit telegrams totalled 1,376,271.

112. The number of television programmes transmitted via satellite for the year under review was 72 totalling 1,324 minutes, as compared with 322 programmes of 7,620 minutes in 1972-73.

113. However, television reception during the year increased from four programmes of 61 minutes to 13 programmes of 961 minutes.

114. The Message Switching Centre, which consists of four com- puter systems, handled 40,389,866 messages in the year ended 31st March, 1974, as compared with 29,850,000 in the previous year. This represents an increase of 35.31 per cent.

115. Cable and Wireless continues to provide round-the-clock maritime communication service via MF, HF, and VHF. In August 1973, two frequencies were added to the system to handle the increas- ing volume of traffic.

116. A total of 30,628 maritime radio telegrams were accepted for transmission and 85,365 radiotelegrams were received, representing an increase of 17.19 per cent and 7.86 per cent respectively.

117. Outward maritime radiotelephone traffic rose by 213.52 per cent to 5,173 minutes, whilst incoming calls dropped by 13.65 per cent to 21,197 minutes.

118. Press broadcasts and reception totalled 20,242 hours in the year ended 31st March, 1974, representing a decrease of 19.14 per cent.

119. In August 1973, the new common control crossbar exchange in the International Telephone Switching Centre in New Mercury House became operational. The new exchange has a capacity of 675 circuits, of which 342 are equipped, as compared with the previous exchange of 267 circuits.
