network of 17 interconnected automatic branch exchanges for the Police Force and a large installation of some 500 extensions for Lai Chi Kok Hospital.
Technical Services
84. The Technical Section of the Division provides advisory, installa- tion and maintenance services for a variety of telecommunication and electronic systems and equipment being used by Government Depart- ments. Technical assessment of specific telecommunication requirements of some 25 departments were made and these included fixed and mobile V.H.F. and U.H.F. radio network, public address, radio paging and radio distribution systems and a language laboratory installation. In some cases installation of the equipment was subsequently undertaken.
85. Maintenance and repair work was carried out by the Workshops on a broad range of electronic and telecommunication equipment, including V.H.F. and U.H.F. radio links, electro-medical apparatus, radar systems, echo sounding equipment and many types of audio recording and reproduction equipment.
86. The assessment of 44 tenders for miscellaneous equipment was undertaken and advice and recommendations for equipment to meet specific requirement were given in some 130 instances.
Public Telephone System
87. The Hong Kong Telephone Company Limited, a Public Company registered in Hong Kong with a nominal capital of HK$250 million, operates under a franchise from the Hong Kong Government which has been extended to 30th June, 1995, and provides all internal telephone services in the Colony. Telephone service to the rest of the world is also provided in conjunction with Cable and Wireless Ltd. and the Hong Kong operators have direct dialling access to distant subscribers in Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, Italy, Japan, Macau, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Philippines, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, United Kingdom, United States and West Germany. The number of overseas calls originating in Hong Kong continues to increase and 24% more were completed in 1969 than during the previous year.
88. The telephone service is fully automatic and is provided from 41 exchanges situated throughout the territory and on the major outlying islands. The rate of demand for telephone service in Hong Kong con-
