78. Staff were made available to the Director of Marine for inspecting and surveying ship radio stations for ensuring compliance with the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea and to advise on the location of equipment in new ship building. 219 ship radio stations were surveyed for the issue of Safety Radio Certificates and 82 vessels were inspected whilst the Direction Finding equipment on 95 vessels was recalibrated.
Radio Monitoring and Interference Control
79. 177 complaints of interference were investigated. In a consider- able proportion of these the interference was traced to H.F. welding machine installations which continue to pose a serious problem due to the emission of spurious radiations. Investigations involved 396 visits to various factories. 272 machines were found to be emitting radiations outside the limits prescribed in the Regulations and 113 factories were operating 298 unlicensed machines. Type approval tests were carried out on locally manufactured H.F. welding plant and two models were certified as being satisfactory.
80. Measurements of the operational frequencies of commercial, land and ship station transmitters were carried out. 282 commercial and 162 ships' transmitters were checked. Routine measurements were con- ducted on civil aviation beacons and ground/air systems.
81. General monitoring of the radio frequency bands was carried out and checks made on the suitability of proposed frequency allocations.
