The bulk of Christmas overseas parcel mail is posted to the United Kingdom, Europe, U.S.A., Canada, Australia and New Zealand. During October/November 1966, 20,668 bags of parcels were made up and despatched to these countries.
53. Approximately 8.1 million items were posted during the period 18th-24th December, 1966 compared with 7.6 million during the same period in 1965, an increase of 6.5%.
Chinese New Year
54. Letter and packet postings during the nine-day period of Chinese New Year totalled 4,743,000 compared with 4,570,000 in the same period last year, an increase of 3.8%.
Parcel Post
55.
Overseas parcel post continued to grow reaching a combined air and surface total of 2,080,113 or 9% above last year. This figure includes 1,624,765 parcels posted in Hong Kong for despatch abroad and 455,348 incoming parcels. Of the outward figure 578,195 parcels were despatched by air.
56. There were 35 cases of violation of parcel mails whilst in course of transmission to or from the Colony, an increase of 6 over the previ- ous year. No violation of mail whilst in the custody of this Department occurred.
Overseas Mails
57. The routing for mails was kept under continuous review and opportunity taken of the most advantageous shipping and aircraft outlets. 58. During the year the range of air parcels despatched was extended to cover all countries which themselves participate in this service.
Registration and Insurance
59. A total of 7,889,752 registered and insured articles were handled during the year, an increase of 714,828 or 9.9% over the previous year.
Local Mails
60. The demanding growth of urban areas and the problems of density in taller buildings were met by additional delivery Postmen, and further surveys are in progress. During the year one additional mechanized delivery was introduced to serve the south of Hong Kong Island and 19 additional foot deliveries were introduced in Kowloon and New Territories.
