81. Final specifications for the sound system for the City Hall were prepared in conjunction with the contractors, Cable & Wireless Ltd. Cinema equipment for the City Hall theatre was tested and accepted from the contractors.
82. Opportunity was taken to reorganize the Medium Frequency Distress Organization in consultation with the Marine Department and Cable & Wireless Ltd.
Telephones
TELECOMMUNICATIONS
83. The internal telephone service is provided by the Hong Kong Telephone Company, Limited, a Public Company operating under a franchise from the Hong Kong Government.
84. A radiotelephone service is available to most parts of the world in co-operation with Cable & Wireless Ltd.
85. The system is fully automatic and service is provided from eight major exchanges together with a number of satellite exchanges and was comprised of 128,535 telephones on 31st December, 1961. Expansion is continuing to meet the continual demand for service, and exchange equipment to cater for an additional 108,000 subscribers' lines, to be housed in five new major exchange buildings, is either on order or in the process of installation.
86. Rentals are charged on a 'flat rate' basis at HK$300 per annum and HK$225 per annum for business and residential lines respectively. No charge is made for local calls except to and from the New Territories.
Other Communications
87. Cable and Wireless Ltd. is responsible for all telegraph, Telex and radiotelephone services between Hong Kong and countries overseas, for telegraph and radiotelephone services with ships at sea, and for a V.H.F. radiotelephone service with ships in Hong Kong harbour. In addition, a service is provided for inland telegrams on Hong Kong Island and in the New Territories.
88. The Company is also responsible for the technical maintenance of the Colony's Aeradio and Meteorological radio services, the Govern- ment broadcasting service, and the V.H.F. communications of various Government departments.
