Christmas Party

114. The Christmas Party for children of personnel of the Depart- ment was attended by no less than 350 children. The children with their parents represented a truly gay and happy gathering which also enabled senior officers to meet the families of members of their staff. Mechan- ically operated 'Round-abouts' were in popular demand; and the circus atmosphere was further advanced by the presence of gaily costumed clowns. Each child was given light refreshment and a tuck box and then entertained to stories, conjuring, etc. by prominent and well-known local guest artists. The highlight and climax of the party was the pre- sentation of a gift to each child by Santa Claus.

115. With the recent influx of new clerks the sporting activities of the Department continued to expand. The Post Office Recreation Club entered two teams in the Hong Kong Tennis league and these teams finished 4th and 5th in the 'C' and 'D' divisions respectively.

116. The Post Office Recreation Club was accepted as a member of the Hong Kong Football Amateur Association and now await the opportunity to enter a team in the 'C' Division, and partake in league games proper under the auspices of the Hong Kong Football Associa- tion. Vacancies are filled annually by ballot and it is a pity that teams wishing to play league football can be denied an opportunity for many years.

117. A large number of competitors keenly contested the table tennis tournament for the 'Saville' cup and after the finals, an outstanding exhibition of play by the table tennis champions was witnessed by the department. I am indeed grateful to them for so readily coming forward to give this yearly exhibition.

118. The annual seven-a-side football competition for the 'Hogarth' Shield was contested by eleven teams; four of which were entered from the uniformed grade. Each game was keenly contested and vociferous advice to the players was ever evident, the Hong Kong Sorting Office Clerical Staff, emerging worthy champions.

119. The swimming gala organized to compete for the 'Crook' Cup was again held at the European Y.M.C.A., Kowloon; the G.P.O. Sorting Office (Clerical) emerging winners. I would like to express my apprecia- tion for the kind assistance given by the Secretary of the Y.M.C.A., and to the Army Authorities for their generosity in providing the necessary lane ropes.
