88. The use of V.H.F. telephone communication apparatus is now used by many stevedoring and utility companies. Nine new licences were issued in the period under review.

89. It was decided during the year that subject to certain regulations the use of a system of V.H.F. communications by taxicab companies for their fleets would be permitted. No company had fitted such a system up to the time of this report.

TELECOMMUNICATIONS ORDINANCE

90. Sixty prosecutions were instituted under the Telecommunications Ordinance. Three charges for the unlawful possession of transmitting equipment resulted in the fines totalling $9,500 or two years and eleven months imprisonment being imposed. The rest were in respect of un- licensed broadcast receivers. With the exception of three cases resulting in cautions, fines ranging from $10 to $25 were imposed.

EXAMINATIONS

91. Six examinations were conducted for the Postmaster General's Certificate of Proficiency in Wireless Telegraphy at the Hong Kong Technical College by arrangement with the Director of Education. Results were as follows:

92. In agreement with the Director of Marine, Radar Examinations were held at the Hong Kong Technical College by this Depart- ment, there being twelve candidates. Nine succeeded in passing the examination.

93. Examination of fourteen Police and Special Police Candidates in Morse Proficiency was undertaken.

94. The Post Office continued to advise the Director of Commerce and Industry on the control of imports and exports of radio equipment; and also the Government and Military Stores Department on disposal of obsolete and confiscated radio equipment.
