of negotiating the Nanking treaty, and bis labours inregard to the supplementary treaty," are well know. The high torms in which Sir Henry Pot singer was pleased to sponk of them at the Glasgow banquet, cannot have been forgotten by many of our readers. His view of the trade of China, past and prospective, published among the sessional pa pers of the House of Commons for 1844, with all tie imperfections necessarily attaching to such a document, is a wonderful monument of knowledge, industry, raciocination, and power of condensation.. It is, indeed, smullum in parto,
On the 5th of March, 1844, her Majesty was nest graciously pleased to testify, her sense and ap- probation of MF Thom's services by appointing him hor Consul at Ningpo, one of the five ports open to foreign trade, in terms of the treaty.
Previously to this, however, disense, contracted in his country service, had made fearful inroada on his constitution, nover a very robust one. Fo ot in June, 1841, after the fatigues and exposure attendant on the singe of Canton; in September 1842, in the Yun-Iso-Kiang, after the conclusion of the Nanking treaty and at Hongkong, ta the simmer of 1843,--left behind them effects from which he never perfectly recovered. Dropsical eymptome suporvened; With difficulty he could bo persunded to ask for leave of absence. This was at once, and kindly, granted. Still he could not be persuadod to leave his post until his succes- gor should arrive. He dreaded lest the public ser- vice should suffer by his departure,” Under such circumstances death overtook him.

Two important brings have these quotations- they show the vast abundance of tea in China, and its small price, the three cash being about equiva ient is one farthing. It is true, thattes for our mar kot is of a peculiar nature, and requires some pre. parution: still there must be, from the everyday con sumpiba ofer population 120 times as large, on Mr PUBLIC AUCTION.

ONE OF THE CITIES OF CHINA.
Sachaw was recently visited by one of the com- mercial deputies attached to the Erench mission, and ought to have been explored by British enter prise, is two days distant from the sea, accessibi only by inland water communication; is the second city of the province of Kiangson, and the residence of a governor.
"Suchaw, like Hangchow, is not only a lown of large commerce and silk manufactures, it is also de voted to pleasure. The Chinese say, "Above is Paradise, below Suchaw; to be happy on earth, ong must be born here, live in Canton, and die in Liu, chan," Suchaw has a high reputation in every part of China for its aplandid carble buildings, the elegance of its tombs, the number of its granite bridges, and artificial canals, gardens, streets, and quays; as also for the politeness of its inhabitants, and especially for the beauty of the female sex
It is said that the city contains one million of inhabitants, and that there is another million in the vicinity. Indeed there are several towns includod in one, comprising what is called Suchaw the city proper, is inclosed with high walls, which are about ten miles in circumference, the suburbs are fours district towns, about ten miles in length, and nearly the same in breadth; the population living on and waters is also very great, Lord Macartney passed through this beautiful city, and fully confirms the foregoing statement. Ilig boats were nearly hours passing the suburbs before they reached the city walls. In one building yard, not less than six- ten vessels of 200 tons each were observed on the stocks. The intelligent and adventurous Mr For- tune, agent for the Horticultural Society, whom I had the pleasure to meet in the North of China, and to accompany to Ningpo, attempted to enter the r without success.
