THE SCOTT MONUMENT.

THE PROCESSION.

*

Saturday last heing the anniversary of the birth of Scotland's unrivalled novelist, Sir Walter Scott, according to previous arrangement, a grand pree cession, followed by a public dinner, took place in Edinburgh, on the occasion of the formal nangh- stion of the beautiful monument erected to his memory in Princes Street. A few days previously the collossal marble statue of the great minstrel had been removed from Mr Steel's studio, and the monument, and the ceremony of inauguration placed under the ground arch in the lower part of was to consist in removing the covering in which it was enveloped, and exposing the statue, for the first time, to public view.

Lord Glenlyan then came forward and sħid- My Lord Provcet, Magistrales, and gentlemen of the original and auxiliary committee, I have to congratulate you, this day, on the completion of this splendia monument, which will stand to future generations 88 A memorial of that illustrious nnel

It was, I th 1940, that my predecessor laid the four stone of this beautiful struélure, and we feel deeply grateful to the great Archit universe, hat, in the course of his exper # single accident occurred a circumaton live, almost unprecedented in the

as my final duly to hand over hy the civic authorities and the uasonic bodies of Edinburgh and the neighbourhood. The effect of these was, however, marred to a great extent by the nature of the weather, which was of the most

daylight till the moment of the procession starting, unpropitious kind for the successful issue of any thing in the shape of exteal pageantry, From

rain fell with little intermission-frequently in torrents, and this placed a effectus interdict on the departing of thousands kom the neighbouring towne, who would otherwise have prided themsel ves on being present to witness, or to take a share in, a ceremony which was well entitled to be cele brated as a national one. Although the deputation from our own city was a highly respectable one in point of numbers, it was still a very limited one,. compared with what i would have been, but for the circumstances already noticed.

The interest of the proceedinga was in aqme measure lessened by the absence of the surviving friends and associates of Sir Walter Scott, as well as the aristocracy of Edinburgh generally, bu, not. withstanding every adverse circumstance,

the in- auguration pased off with tolerable éclat. The great body of the strangers and tourists at present. sojourning in Scotland had bent their steps towards the capital on this occssion; and the trading por- tion of the citizens of Edinburgh themselves had resolved to honour the occasion as a holiday. While on the subject of the sculpture, it is proper to mention abat the figures occuping the four ni ches inmedustely over the principal arch, were designed and executed by three Edinburgh artists, whose nihirlition of Scott, and approbation of the general design, induced them spontaneously to un- dertake their execution, ata ente. which can hardly be considered other aban, gratuitous.
