The expenditure has exceeded that sum by $285.23, leaving the Committee in debt to the amount of $781.70. Relying on the generosity of the public, the Committee would again come forward, and respectfully solicit their aid in the liquidation of this sum. Contributions towards this object will be received by any of the members of the Committee. The papors containing the subscriptions already received. may be seen at the house of the Treasurer, R. Strachan Esq.

From the London Mail, Sept. 21. FOREIGN INTELLIGENCE. AMERICA The probability of a war with Mex- Fien is the all-ongrossing subject of speculation..

The Times correspondent says: "President Polk and his advisers are for war. Nothing, therefore, will be done by him to avoid the apprehended col lision. Mexico is known to be weak, and almost incapable of resistance. With the Administration This fact, probably, is not without its influence; but there is another consideration which operates upon the Government party-they believe, and I couenr in opinion with them, that a war will streng- then their hands. If we have war, there will be a large expenditure of public money many profitable agencies, numerous army and other appointments. Thus by the patronage of the Government a band of mercenaries will be croated, who, with their re- latives and friends, will be ever ready to applaud and justify every act of the Administration, how- ever unjustifiable those nets may be. But this is not all. If the war shall be deemed by a portion of the community untccessary or unwarantable, and they attempt to express these sentiments, they will be branded by the war party as traitors to their country, who abandoned ter standard in the hour of peril, when she was fighting for her exis lence against a foreign to Few mon, however sound ray be their principles possess the necessa- ry firioness to face such a charge; while the wa- vering and the timed, finding themselves sorely pressed on every side, and dreading the conse quence, will send in their adhesion to the dominant party,"
