He has the command of the garrison charged to main. tain the Protectorate, and protect the commerce and the
- foreigncts reliding in the country.
All the property of your Majesty, which is not necessary to the defence of the island, will be put at your disposal, and you will be indemnified for that taken. It is for the interest of the people whom you are called to government that bar. mony should be restored.
Too many misfortunes have already been the conse.. quence of the difficulties which have existed here since your Majesty has quitted the soil of Tahiti, and you would render yourself responsible for all the misfortunes that may arise in future if you should not put a stop to them by returning to Papoite.
"Now it is unnecessary to eny that your Majesty will be treated with all the respect due to you, and that all the honors to which you have a right will be rendered to you.
I will be proper that your Majesty should return to Tahiti in a French man.of-war, I put at your disposal the steamer Phaeton to bring you to Papeite with all the persons comprising your suite..
My presence can only be but short here, ungent business calling me to the coast of Pera
I beg your Majesty to return as soon as possible, in or. der to proceed to the restoration If againt my expectation, your Majesty should not return in the ship. I put at your dis posal, I should beg of you to trust me with your eldest son, whom I would recognise as sovereign. Your Majesty musi not depend upon the intervention of a foreign power, you have no need of it and France would not accept it. The ex- ecution of the treaty of Sept. 9, 1812, is the only mode of establishing between France and your Majesty, the harmony which ought never to have been disturbed I regret so much more that your Majesty is not at Papiet, that I should have the honour to remit you myself the fetter of the King of the French, by which he grants you his act of high indulgence, which you solicited.
I give it to the care of Captain Cléry, my chief of stat major, to whom I give charge to deliver it to you, and to bring you back to Tahid, when your presence I am certain will reestablish peace and tranquility.
I am, &c, &c. (Signed) HAMELIN For true copy of Rear Admiral Commander in Chief of the etation of Oceania and western coast of America.

L'opy of the letter addressed by the Governor to the chiefs and authorities of Tahiti, Morea and other Islands of the group.
"TAHITI, 5th Jan. 1845. SALUTATIONS TO you →I address you the particulars of the unsuccessful endeavors made by the Chief of the état major of the Rear Admiral, in order to engage Queen Pomare to
return to Papeite, to re-establish the Protectorate. I will warn you that I am going to hoist again the flag of the Pro- ctorate as soon as the chiefs will be assembled, and that i eball remit the power that the treaty grants to them.
It will give mo pleasure to have you assist in the fete that I give on the 8th of this month (aryle de Tahiti). On this occasion the Admiral and myself will let you know the good words of the King Louis Phillips, and the firm resolution of
France to maintain the Protectorate.
The next day, Thurs.
day the 9th you are invited to assemble in general assembly, I will give yan the assurance that all the past will be forgot. ten, and that I have only the purpose to re.establish amongst you, union and concord- without which the country cannot "but be unhappy, and the laws without vigor.
"Salutations to you, "BRUAT "The Governor,"
A great number of chiefs promptly complied with the request of the Governor, but at Papenos and Pinps, in the name of Teritons contrary to the desire of many chiefs the dispatches brought by the messenger were prevented from being opened that an answer should be seat to the Governor.
Outomi chief of Pongaoia, sent an answer by writing that he should not come. All this happened before the 7th of Jan. the day fixed by the Governor for the solemnity for the res toration of the Protectorate Aag.
