Much disappointment is felt at the non-arrival of the September and October mails, which have been delayed beyond all precendent since the overland route was established. London dates are now five months old, nor from Bombay or Calcutta have we later intelligence, than to the 7th and 14th Oct. When we consider the very important nature of the trade of China, both with England and India, and the large share of the national revenue that is drawn directly there from; also the thousands of operatives who are. employed in manufacturing goods for this mar- ket, the necessity for a quick and regular com munication is made sufficiently evident. It is true, that through the medium of a class of vessels, employed between China and India unsurpassed for swiftness, and the liberality of their owners, who sail theu at a heavy expence, a more regular and speedy communication has THE FRIEND OF CHINA, been kept up, than could be done by any other

Her Majesty's Consulate,
In the present circumstances of the colony, the leparture of any one lady of amiable dispo- sition must be considerably felt by society. But when we take into consideration the desira- bility of having always a lady of high position, sound judgment, and esteemed character to give a tone and direction to that portion of the con- munity which may be said to form the Corinthian capital of the social column, it will be readily admitted that Mrs. D'Aguilar's place cannot easily be supplied.
