BAY OF BENGAL.
Sand banks off Mullaittivu on the North-East Coast of Ceylon.
As there is reason to believe that the Sand banks off Mullaittivu on the North-East Coast of Ceylon have extended further seaward than they are marked in the Admiralty Chart of the East Coast of Ceylon, Mariners are hereby cautioned when in the vicinity of that part of the Ceylon Coast to be careful and not come under 20 fathoms water until they are certain of having passed the danger, as the water shoals rapidly from 20 fathoms a few miles outside of the sand ridges to 15, 12 and 9 fathoms close on their outer edge. On some of these ridges there are not more than 12 feet of water.
