The following notices have been issued during the month :---
On the 31st August, at 6.00 p.--Orders issued to hoist the Black Cone point down- wards (indicates a typhoon South of Colony within 300 miles).
A depression appears to be developing over the China Sea to the Southward of Hong- kong in from 18° to 20° Lat.
On the 1st September, at 11.40 a.-Orders issued to hoist the Black Cone point downwards and Ball (indicates a typhoon S. W. of Colony within 300 miles)."The barometer has risen slightly on the China coast, except in the neighbourhood of Hongkong; and fallen a little over the Philippines. The depression, which appears to be shallow, is to the S.W. of Hongkong, and moving apparently towards Hainan. Pressure is still relatively high over China to the North of the Yangtze. Fresh N.E. winds may be expected in the Formosa Channel, and strong cyclonic winds over the N.W. part of the China Sea." Forecast: E. winds, fresh; squally, showery."
At 5.30 p.---- Signals lowered.
On the 2nd at 12.05 p.-The barometer has risen moderately in the neighbourhood of Hongkong, and a slight rise has taken place also over N. China and Japan. Pressure is high over N. China and the Sea of Japan, and low over the N.W. part of the China Sea, and over the Pacific to the N.E. of Luzon. Fresh to strong N.E. winds are expected to prevail in the Formosa Channel, and along the Northern shores of the China Sea." cast :-“E. to N.E. winds, fresh; squally, showery."
On the 3rd at 12.05 p.--"The barometer has risen slightly on the S. coast of China, and in Japan. The existence of a low pressure area over the Pacific to the N.E. of Luzon, is still indicated. Pressure is high over Central China and E. Japan. Fresh to strong N.E. winds are expected to prevail in the Formosa Channel, and the N. part of the China Sea.” Forecast:-"N. E. winds, fresh : fair."
On the 4th at 11.30 a. "The barometer has fallen slightly over the Loochoos, Formosa and the Philippines. The depression over the Pacific appears to be situated to the Eastward of the Balingtang Channel, and to be moving towards W.N.W. at present. Pressure remains high over N. China and E. Japan. Strong N. and N.E. winds are expected to Forecast:“N. prevail in the Formosa Channel, and over the N.E. part of the China Sea." winds, fresh; squally,”
On the 5th at 11.55 a.--“The barometer has fallen considerably over the Loochoos, and a slight to moderate fall has occurred also over S. China, Formosa and Luzon. The typhoon which appears to be situated to the South of the Loochoos in about 21° Lat., seems to be moving Northwards. Presssure remains high over N. China and the N. part of the Sea of Japan. Strong N. and NE. winds are expected to prevail in the Formosa Chamel, and the N. part of the China Sea." Forecast :-- N. winds, fresh; squally, fair.”
On the 6th at 11.55 a. "The barometer has fallen considerably over the Loochoos, and risen slightly in the Philippines. The typhoon is now situated to the South of Naha (Loochoos). It continues to move slowly Northwards. Pressure remains high over China to the North of the Yangtze, and over N.E. Japan. Strong N. winds are expected to prevail in the Formasa Channel, and fresh N. to W. winds over the N. part of the China Sea." Forecast :—“ N. winds, fresh ; fair, squally."
On the 7th at 11.55 a.- The barometer has fallen moderately over the E. and N. consts of China, and risen slightly to moderately over S. China, Formosa and the Philippines. The Japanese returns are not yet to hand, but probably the typhoon has passed to the Eastward of the Loochoos and is now approaching the S. coast of Japan. Pressure is still high over China to the North of the Yangtze. Moderate N. to N.E. winds are expected to prevail in the Formosa Channel and along the Northern shores of the China Sea." Forecast:---"N. to N.E. winds, moderate; fine.”
On the 8th at 12.5 p.—“The barometer has fallen moderately over the N.E. coast of China. Yesterday afternoon the typhoon was moving Northwards in the neighbourhood. of Nagasaki. The Japanese and Formosan returns for this morning are not yet to hand. Pressure is still relatively high over the Upper Yangtze. Moderate N.E. to N.W. winds are likely to prevail in the Formosa Channel and the N. part of the China Sea." Forecast:- "N. winds, light to moderate; fine."
