MONSIEUR L'AMBASSADEUR,

A la date du 8 Octobre dernier, vous avez bien voulu me communiquer la copie d'une lettre du Marquis de Salisbury vous accusant réception de l'invitation que vous avez adressée au Gouvernement de la Reine de prendre part officiellement à l'Exposition Universelle de 1900. Nous avons constaté avec satisfaction que notre démarche avait été prise en serieuse considération à Londres et, comptant sur votre efficace intervention, nous nous plaisons à considérer d'ores et déjà comme probable le concours de la Grande Bretagne et des possessions Anglaises."

En ce qui concerne ces dernières, je n'ai pas fait parvenir l'invitation spéciale aux Gouvernements Coloniaux. J'ai pensé en effet que nous devions laisser à la métropole le soin de provoquer, si elle le jugeait à propos la participation de ses

colonies à nos assises industrielles.

Je vous serais obligé de vouloir bien à l'occasion appeler l'attention du Marquis de Salisbury sur les raisons de courtoisie qui ont motivé notre réserve et de le prier de signaler aux colonies de Self Government l'intérêt que nous attachons à les voir représentées à l'Exposition de 1900.

YOUR EXCELLENCY :-

Her Majesty's Government have given careful consideration to your note of the 28th of September last, inviting Great Britain to take part in the Universal International Exhibition which is to be held at Paris from the 15th of April to the 5th of November, 1900.

I have now the honour to inform Your Excellency in reply that Her Majesty's Government will have great pleasure in officially participating in this Exhibition, which they believe will tend to draw still closer the relations of friendship which exist between Great Britain and France.

I shall feel obliged if Your Excellency will inform me in due course when it will be desirable that preliminary operations should begin at Paris in connection with the organization of the British Section of the Exhibition of 1900; and I shall be glad to receive at any time such further information upon the subject as the French Government may see fit to supply.
