On the 3rd at 11.30 a. "The barometer has risen moderately over N. China, S. Japan, and the S. Philippines; and fallen slightly over Formosa and the S. coast of China. Pres- sure is high over Central China, and low in a depression which having passed over E. Japan yesterday, has now moved into the Pacific. Pressure continues relatively low in the trough, which is liable to give rise to a circular depression, Iving over the China Sea, probably in about 16° Lat. The normal pressure is exceeded by about 0.1 inch over N. China; and is

Forecast:- in defect by about 0.3 inch over N.E. Japan and by 0.05 inch in Luzon." "N.E. winds, moderate; fair."

On the 4th at 11.40 a.-"The barometer has risen slightly over Japan and the Philip- pines, and fallen briskly in the neighbourhood of Hongkong. Probably a depression has formed in the trough to the N.E. of the Paracels. It appears to be shallow and to be moving towards N W. Pressure is highest over N. China where it exceeds the normal by about 0.1 It is also inch. Over N.E. Japan it remains low, and in defect between 0.2 and 0.3 inch. over 0.1 inch below the normal in the neighbourhood of Hongkong." Forecast:--“ E. winds, fresh or strong; squally, rainy."

On the 5th at 11.30 a. "The barometer has risen in Japan, and fallen slightly over the Gulf of Pechili, Hongkong and the S. Philippines. The depression has probably approached the coast in the neighbourhood of Hainan Straits. It apparently continues to It remains low over N.E. move towards NW. Pressure is highest over Central China. Japan. in rear of a depression which was passing to the Northward of Hokkaido and moving towards the Pacific yesterday afternoon. Departures from the normal pressure are slight, Fore- except over N.E. Japan and in Hongkong where it is in defect by about 0.2 inch.” cast:-"S.E. winds, strong; squally, showery.'

On the 6th at 11.20 a. "The barometer has risen over Japan and in the neighbour- hood of Hongkong, and fallen over the E. Coast of China and the Philippines. The depression has probably moved into the Gulf of Tongking. The decrease of pressure over the Philippines appears to be due to a new depression over the Pacific, probably to the E. of Luzon. Pressure is highest over S. Japan, where the normal is slightly exceeded. It is in defect about 0.1 inch in Hongkong, and about the same amount over the Philippines. Forecast :-“S. E. and E. winds, fresh to moderate; showery to fair.'

On the 7th at 11.55 a.- The barometer has risen over the S. and N. Coasts of China, and fallen in Formosa and Meiaco Sima. The depression appears to be situated to the N.E. of Luzon, and to be moving towards N.W. A shallow area of low pressure lies off the S. Coast of Japan. Pressure is highest over N. China. It is about 0.1 inch in defect of the Forecast:- "E. to N.E. winds, normal over Central Japan, S. Formosa and at Manila." light to moderate; weather improving.'

On the 8th at 11.30 a. — "The barometer has fallen rapidly over Formosa and the S. and S.E coasts of China, and risen over the S. Philippines. The typhoon has reached S. Formosa. It apparently continues to move towards N.W., and threatens the Coast in the neighbourhood of Amoy. The other depression has moved into the Pacific to the N.E. of Japan. Pressure is highest over N. China, where the normal is slightly exceeded. In S. Formosa it is 0.3 inch in defect. Bad weather will prevail in and to the Northward of the Formosa Channel." Forecast:-" N. to N.W. winds, freshening; fine at first, squally with rain later." At 4.20 p.--Orders issued to hoist the Black Drum.

On the 9th at 10.55 a. “The barometer has fallen on the China Coast, particularly in Amoy. The typhoon is off the Coast to the S.E. of Amoy. It continues to move towards N.W. Pressure is high, apparently, to the N.W. of China. It is below the normal from 0.3 to 0.5 inch between Hongkong and Foochow and in Formosa.

Bad weather will con-

tinue in and to the Northward of the Formosa Channel, and strong N.W. and W. winds will prevail over the N. part of the China Sea." Forecast:--- N.W. winds, strong; fair, squally." At 11.5 a. -Orders issued to hoist the Black Cone point upwards with the Drum. At 9.50 p.-Signal lowered.

On the 10th at 11.40 a.-

The barometer has risen over Formosa and the S. and S.E. Coasts of China, and fallen on the East Coast. The typhoon centre entered the Coast yesterday evening a little to the South of Amoy. It appears to be spreading Northwards as an ordinary depression. Pressure probably remains high to the N.W. of China, and it is also about 0.1 inch above normal over S.E. Japan. It remains in defect from 0.2 to 0.3 inch on the China Coast between Hongkong and Shanghai, Gradients are rather steep over the E. Coast of China, and strong winds to gales from S.E. to N.E. will prevail over that area. Moderate N.W. to S.W. winds are indicated over the N. part of the China Sea." Forecast :-“ N.W. winds, moderate; fine."
