Replacement Airport

e)

RESTRICTED

Existing airport at Kai Tak will be inadequate for needs beyond 1990. Decision on whether to build replacement was expected to be taken in early 1983 but now likely that timing will slip. Most likely site for new airport is at Chek Lap Kok. US firm (Parsons) undertaking master plan (with some input from UK Civil Aviation Authority) and civil engineering study. DOI considering possibility of persuading HKG of advantages of negotiated contracts with UK for airport. Costs could be of the order of £ 1 B with UK content amounting to around a quarter. If airport project goes ahead this will tie in with construction of proposed bridges

from Lantau island to mainland.

Lantau Fixed Crossing

f) UK companies interest in proposal valued at £200 M to

construct three bridges (two suspension) linking Lantau with mainland. Project closely linked to proposed airport development but possible that decision to proceed with bridges may be taken in advance of any firm decision on airport.

Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) Headquarters

g)

In October 1981 contract for about £200 M awarded to George Wimpey INternational in joint venture with John Lock and Partners

for HSBC's new headquarters. Subcontract for structural steel (about £55 M) awarded to British Steel Corporation and Redpath Dorman Long. Construction began January 1982 to be completed by mid 1985.

Cross Harbour Links

h) Wilbur Smith and Associates undertaking study of cross

harbour links with engineering advice from Mott Hay and Anderson. Two most likely developments are bridge at Lye Mun and tunnel at western side.

Hong Kong-China Road Project

i)

Joint China-Hong Kong feasibility study on road between Hong Kong and Guangzhou with separate spur to Macao now completed. Roads to be build in joint venture by Hopewell Holdings (Hong Kong) and Chinese Government. UK firms interested in some contracts.

Guangdong Nuclear Power Project
