increases in electricity consumed in the

half include

shipbuilding, toys, metal products and electrical goods.

Electricity consumed by the transport equipment and non-metallic minerals products industries declined in the same

period.

Survey

According to the results of the Quarterly Business (2)

conducted in April 1982, manufacturers in general experienced a deterioration in business in the first quarter. High interest rates, insufficient orders, high wage rates and

price competition were quoted as the major problems

(2) The Quarterly Business Surveys conducted by the Census and Statistics Department seek from respondents their impression of business conditions in the immediately

the immediately preceding quarter and their opinion regarding business prospects in the forthcoming quarter. The sample used for the survey consists of some 800 firms taken from various sectors. It is a selection of the largest firms in each sector plus a random sample of medium sized firms.
