HONG KONG ASSOCIATION

1. I understand that you will be the guest of Mr Henry Keswick and the Hong Kong Association at lunch tomorrow.

/ 2. In advance of that you may wish to look at the attached papers, which are self-explanatory. As you will see, Mr Keswick is strongly supporting the idea that the British Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong should be revitalised, with a new infusion of money from leading British companies in Hong Kong. (Mr Keswick has told Mr Stephen Day privately that Jardines would be ready to put up a million HK Dollars if other companies were ready to match this sum.) Mr Hugh Davies has expressed interest in putting his name forward to become Director/Chief Executive of the Chamber on secondment from the Diplomatic Service.

3. I do not know to what extent the Hong Kong Association have a collective view on the question of reviving the British Chamber of Commerce, but I imagine the subject may well come up at lunch. No-one outside the FCO knows of Mr Davies' possible interest in a job with the Chamber.
