Thank you for forwarding to us copies of correspondence about Mauritian visa requirement for BN (0) passport holders.

As you will be aware from our telno 226 to Hong Kong of 9 March which was copied to you we have been corresponding with Hong Kong about this matter. It is good news that the Mauritians have agreed to lift visa restrictions on BN (0)s. You note in your minute of 25 February that the period of visa free access is to end, somewhat illogically, on 31 December 1996. Hong Kong of course seeks visa free access for BN (0)s up until 31 June 1997 at least (when China resumes sovereignty over the territory) and ideally thereafter as well. As you say in your minute the Hong Kong Government will no doubt take this up with the Mauritians.
