Dear Mr Danker,

HONG KONG NATIONALITY MATTERS: ETHNIC MINORITIES

1.

I am copying to you the briefing prepared for Mr Goodlad for a call by a delegation from the House Committee of the Hong Kong Legislative Council. You will see that one of the two main points they raised was the question of British citizenship for the ethnic minorities. Our telno 570 (not to Bombay) gives an account of the meeting. At the time of writing no account is available of the meeting with the Home Secretary, but I am told by his Private Office that the Home Secretary stated categorically that there were no plans to introduce British citizenship for this group.

2.

Please refer to your telno 383 and our telnos 338 and 386. We would still be interested to know what members of the ethnic minority group would need to do in order to obtain Indian citizenship and would be grateful if you could make enquiries and let us know of any result.

Yours

hebook Barone
