Important notice

Please read the following carefully before you complete the application form.

Eligibility

British National (Overseas) passports are issued to British Dependent Territories citizens who derive their citizenship through a connection with Hong Kong by birth, naturalisation, registration, adoption or descent.

Dual nationality

If the child possesses the nationality or citizenship of another country, he may lose this when he gets a British National (Overseas) passport. Please check with the authorities of the country concerned before making the application.

Your choices

(1) You may apply for a British National (Overseas) passport valid for five years (renewable for another five years) for the child now;

OR

(2) You may apply for a British Dependent Territories citizen passport valid for five years (renewable up to 30 June 1997) for the child and apply to exchange it for a British National (Overseas) passport before 1 July 1997.

Retention of British Nationality

Under Article 3 of the Hong Kong (British Nationality) Order 1986, a person who is a British Dependent Territories citizen by virtue of a connection with Hong Kong only shall cease to be such a citizen on I July 1997.

The child may however retain British nationality by obtaining or being included in a British National (Overseas) passport before that date.

Geographical validity

The passport will be made valid for all countries in the world.
