MR GOODLAD'S VISIT TO HONG KONG: 11-12 OCTOBER 1993
BRIEF NO. 8
MEETING WITH JAMES CHIU AND WILLIAM COURTAULD (CHAIRMAN AND VICE CHAIRMAN OF BRITISH CHAMBER OF COMMERCE)
List of dinner quests at Annex A
Pleased to learn of appointment of Brigadier Hammerbeck as
Chief Executive. Disappointed that we have not yet been able
to meet.
- From what I have heard, he is well placed to carry forward
the Chamber's strategy to boost its profile and status before
1997.
Consulate General Building
Developing commercial and economic relations between the
United Kingdom and the future Special Administrative Region
will be a key function of the Consulate General. British
Chamber of Commerce has an important role to play too.
We are keen to include the British Chamber of Commerce in
the new Consulate General building if that can be arranged.
We are now discussing this project with the Hong Kong
Government in the context of the Private Treaty Grant. Mr
Cornish will keep you informed.
- For public expenditure reasons we shall need to charge the British Chamber of Commerce a fair rent for the space they
occupy. Aware of your concern that rent/running costs in the
new building should be manageable for the Chamber.
Am unable to give you details of likely costs at this stage.
