5. The deadlines for the Prime Minister's briefing are dictated by No. 10's requirements and the need to submit all the briefs to Mr Heathcoat-Amory for his weekend box at lunchtime on 19 November. Any department who foresee a need to update these briefs nearer to the time of the summit should notify WED as soon as possible. Any such updating should be kept to the absolute minimum.

I should be grateful if briefs could be concise, cleared as necessary with other Government Departments, particularly where these Departments will be represented at the summit. would also be useful, where appropriate, if departments could pick up the suggestion for joint British-German co-operation in their area that have been made in recent correspondence within the Office and with the Embassy in Bonn. We shall shortly be circulating to relevant departments for their comments a revised text of the proposed press

statement that might serve as the basis of an opening statement by the Prime Minister at the Press Conference of

the summit.
