MR GOODLAD'S VISIT TO BRUNEI: 29-31 JULY 1993

HONG KONG: GARRISON

HKD 021/.

23 JUL 1993

Points to make

The recent announcement about the Hong Kong garrison was merely an elaboration of our plans for the rundown of the garrison before 1997. The announcement does not imply any change in our longer-term plans for the future of the Brigade

of Gurkhas.

Elements of all three forces (the Army, the Royal Navy and the RAF) will remain until June 1997. From 1995 to 1997 Hong Kong will still be our second biggest overseas garrison (after Cyprus).

The amalgamated Gurkha battalion (the Royal Gurkha Rifles) will withdraw on present plans in late 1996.

No effect on Brunei, except that command and administrative responsibilities for the Brunei garrison will transfer from Hong Kong to the UK in 1995.
