MY VISIT TO MALAYSIA AND SINGAPORE:
1-7 APRIL 1993

1. I spent 1-7 April visiting Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur and Penang) and Singapore. The main purpose of my visit was to help create the right political climate for doing more and better business.
2. As you know, I lived in Singapore in the early 1970s and knew Malaysia well; but I had not been back for some 15 years. The changes since then have been truly remarkable and this development looks set to continue for some time to come. In both Malaysia and Singapore a substantial proportion of the administration and professions were at least partly educated in Britain and there is a tremendous fund of goodwill towards us. Many still look to Britain for their higher education, but there is no scope for complacency: must devote considerable effort and attention if we are to continue to exploit an important national asset.
