I would be interested in having Martin Laing's paper as I would like to have cleazer sense of how to conduct this session. I am not quite sure how we thought "good corporate citizenship" would fit into this session. We are working on the up-date on exchange activities between J.K. and Japan.

5. I had some discussion with Shiina on the mattar David Howell raised with him. We will he discussing among nuraalvee dawnlwing Yukio Satoh and others as well, and we hope to be communicating to you on this. My personal view ia that this may well politicize the U.K.-Japan 2000 Group, and, thus, divert us from our principal mission. I also feel that it is getting more sensitive to discuss a broader Asian regional subject by major economic powers alone. This is precisely a conclusion Gerry Curtis and I reached last week traveling through Southeast Asia together to explore an appropriate intellectual frame- work for the proposed American Assembly on "U.S. and Japan in Asia-Pacific."

I plan to be in Tokyo much of the month of February, and I will be able to focus a bit more on our conference. Let us stay in close touch to have as much of preparatory work to make the forthcoming conference as substantive as possible.
