PRESS ENQUIRY: CHONG KWEE-SUN

M

BISTR

1. Greg Torode of the SCMP's news desk called me again on 13 August about this case. As I told you, he had called on 12 August when he seemed to know a number of details of the case, including the involvement of the PA's Office. I had declined to comment as I was unaware of the case but undertook to check with the relevant officers. Hence this second call.

2.

As agreed, I said only that we were aware of the case and had raised it on a number of occasions with the Chinese MFA. He additionally asked:

-How had the Chinese reponded?

-What level were our representations made at?

-Had we raised the case with anybody else, eg the Chinese Embassy in London?

-Would I describe Chong's detention as a human rights violation?

3. I said that we were not prepared to make any comment beyond what I had already told him.
