Chris to to sward our Freedon Award Governor of Hong Kong, during his important vizit to the United States in earl; May. The Award gone to those persons or associations that fight for the advancement of human liberty. We believe Mr. Patten deserves public recognition for his sustained, unswerving efforts to secure a free and democratie future for Hong Kong.

As you can see from our list of trustees, Freedott Board some of the most House counts among its prestigious names. in America concerned with foreign' policy and particularly human'sights and democracy. Recently, I was extremely honored to skewne che position of chairman from Ambassador Max Karpaiman, who is esteemed for his role in the CSCE proceas and the arms limitations calks during the 1980s. Our approach to such issues is bipartisan as you can sea from the presence on our board of former Ambassadore to the Daited Nations--Dr. Jeans J. Kirkp: rick and Andy Young.

Freedom House was founded fifty-two years age by Eleanor Roosevelt and wandell Willkie to combat the isolationist trends in America and to foster public support for those threatened by Hitler's Germany. One particularly interested party to our creation and early activities was Sir Winston Churchill, en. early recipient of our Freedom Award. Over the Kouse has encouraged American years. Freedom involvement in the United Nations, campaigned for the Marshall. Plan and the creation of NATO, supported efforts to resist the Soviet take-over of Eastern Europe. Most recently, we have been staunch advocates of supporting democracy abroad by working
