RECIPROCAL ENFORCEMENT OF JUDGEMENTS AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE UK AND HONG KONG AFTER 1997

1. I am writing to ask whether you are yet in a position to reply to the proposal made in Mr Ricketts' letter of 4 June to David Gladwell about the possibility of negotiating a Reciprocal Enforcements of Judgements agreement with Hong Kong to come into force after 1 July 1997 (your letter to Mr Ricketts of 23 June refers). I should be grateful for any comments you may have, particularly any detailed comments on the draft text enclosed in the aforementioned letter.

2. We hope to hold meetings soon to discuss any concerns you and others may have on the draft text and to prepare our position in advance of the talks with the Hong Kong Government. At the moment we are not sure when those talks will be:

as the Sino-British Joint Liaison Group will now be meeting in London in December rather than September, it may be more convenient to hold them in early-to-mid December.
